Science New Wave Awards

Evaluation, Categories & Gene Expression Levels

Science New Wave Luminaries (if not participating in any of the productions of the year) are inviting you to evaluate the annual slate of 64 films. Or, more poetically / biologically speaking, to gauge their gene expression levels. Gene expression greatly varies based on context, time and interacting (transcription) factor in a particular cell + individual. One could argue that this biological fact could easily apply to cinematic expression -- and even be used as a guiding principle for redefining film evaluations.

The Science New Wave Luminary Awards are :

- Science New Wave Award

- In Vivo Award

- Theme-Sensitive Award

- Avant-Garde Award

Science New Wave Award: Embracing the subjective nature of this artistic/biological experiment, please rate how strongly do each of these films expresses the 6 combined traits of the Science New Wave Manifesto

trait #1: Culture is Science. Science is Culture.

trait #2: Diversity feeds the ecosystem.

trait #3: Experiments become Cinema.

trait #4: Structure dictates function.

trait #5: Science & Story never collide.

trait #6: WE ARE ALL MESSENGERS.

In Vivo Award goes to a film that paints a daring yet realistic portrait of a scientist and/or other organism.

Theme-Sensitive Award recognizes a film which brings to the screen in singular fashion this year's festival theme

Avant-Garde Award celebrates the film best expressing hybrid aesthetics and experimentation.

Guidelines on Luminary voting:

-The voting period is the month of November after the annual festival.

-Only the SNW Luminary members can view the annual selection. Do not share film links nor this voting form with anyone else.

-Films are listed in alphabetical order (in their original language) starting with films titled with numbers listed first. Each film title is linked to their Labocine page for viewing. But feel free to view the films in any order.

- Luminaries are a critical part of our evolution of the Science New Wave movement/community. Hence, we always ask them to provide us with 7th trait thatthey think should/could be added to the Science New Wave.

A bit of film history... The 7th trait is reminiscent of the "art" of cinema being referred to as the 7th art (septième art / settima arte). In 1911, Italian film theoretician Ricciotto Canudo described cinema as the seventh art, announcing its place among the more established and reputable traditions of architecture, sculpture, painting, music, poetry, and dance.

If you're having trouble viewing a film or if you are a Luminary and haven’t received the ballot or need assistance of any type with this voting sheet, send us a message to sciencenewwave@labocine.com. We will get back to you
